Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial Wall
The Michigan Vietnam Veteran Traveling Memorial Wall was created in 2005 by
SSgt Kurt Damrow and John Swanson in memory of Damrow's cousin,
Navy GMG3 Oliver Damrow of Kinde, Michigan, who was killed in Vietnam
shortly after beginning his second tour of duty.
The memorial wall features the names of Michigan's 2,654 casualties.
In addition to the memorial, the display will feature books with
biographies on each of Michigan's casualties as well as photos
of more than 1,400 of them. The public is invited to bring photos
of friends and relatives killed in action during Vietnam
so that their photos may be included in the books.

Hi Eileen,
I LOVE this newsletter! I'm from a large family,
my mother is the oldest of eleven. They grew up
in Lincoln Park MI , so even though I just turned
50, I remember lots of the events and places in
this Newsletter.
I watched the Bowling for Fun segment (VERY
enjoyable!) in the Jan 2011 issue and it reminded me of Bowling for Dollars show that used to air
locally. My mother was a contestant on the show.
Her name at the time was Loretta Roberts . I was
wondering if you could include a segment of
Bowling for Dollars in one of your future issues,
and if possible perhaps locate the segment that
my mother bowled in. It would be great fun for
all of our huge family to see and reminisce.
Thank you and keep up the great work with
this newsletter!

EILEEN: Sorry, Kim, but the only videos I know of that are available are on YouTube, and none of them seem to be from Detroit. Bowling for Dollars was franchised in many cities across the U.S. Back in those days, not many local TV shows were preserved the way they are now. For one thing, those
big reels of film were not only a storage problem, they were expensive. Besides, who knew that 50 years later there'd be a market for this stuff?!
Chuck Walby , who was the host of Beat The Champ , passed away in June 2010. His daughter, Wendy , is sending me a DVD of one entire show. When she does, I'll upload it to YouTube and post it in the next Newsletter.

Eileen:
Got a kick out of the latest issue ( Jan 2011 ). The section on bowling really brought back memories. Growing up in Highland Park and bowling at Log Cabin Lanes reminded me of my wife's uncle, John Zech , who managed the lanes for years. Also, my wife Lois ( Carnaghie ) graduated from Regina H.S. in '64. She lived on Seymour and Gratiot . Her mother, Lucille , was a Schoenherr , so connections are all around.
We enjoy the monthly Detroit Memories Newsletter and the various contributions from your readers.

Hi Eileen!
Sorry to read about the death of Mr. Foy ( Jan 2011 issue), the voice of the introduction The Lone Ranger series. It was
one of my favorites. It reminded me of a former Grosse
Pointe Shores resident, George Trendle , who owned that
series. He lived on the corner of Lakeshore and Lochmoor .
His house had a huge front bay window and the curtains
were always drawn when I passed by, which was often.
Mr Trendle has several google hits. One of these follows:
I remember my dad telling me something about Sergent Preston and his dog King . George had a role in renaming the dog, King. Be sure to read the HISTORY section
of the following Wikipedia entry. The Green Hornet was also associated with
Mr. Trendle .

EILEEN: I found an online article titled The Miser of Motown: George W. Trendle . It may explain why the curtains were always drawn.
Trendle was born on the 4th of July in 1884 and died in 1972. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit .

ALBERTA MUIRHEAD
January 18, 2011
Together with her husband John , who passed in 1983, Mrs. Muirhead owned and managed the landmark Muirhead's department store in Dearborn for more than 40 years. A graduate of MacKenzie High School, she died last month at the age of 91.
Located at the corner of Military Street and Michigan Avenue , Muirhead's evolved from selling toys to selling baby furniture and infant clothing to selling a
full line of apparel for men, women and children.
