THE DETROIT SHOPPE
At Somerset Mall in Troy MI

In the December 2010 issue, we told you about this terrific store with
all of the good ol' Detroit stuff you remember!

Faygo / Vernors / Coney Dogs / Badass beer / Pewabic Pottery
Germack pistachios / Sanders hot fudge / Velvet Peanut Butter.
McClure’s pickles / Motown music / and more

You can also buy items from the major Detroit area cultural institutions and venues such as the DIA, DSO, Detroit Opera, Museum of African American History, The Henry Ford,
Eastern Market, Motown Museum, Fisher Theater, Pewabic Pottery and Detroit Zoo.

Mike Bieke, who (like me) grew up in St. Clair Shores
and now lives in Phoenix AZ, was in the Detroit area over
the Christmas holidays and made a special trip to shoot a few
photos of the store. I've uploaded them to the
Detroit Memories Webshot album:
http://community.webshots.com/album/579262898GXZtyF
You'll also see photos taken by Doreen Behrens Rossan.

Mike's comments: "It is an amazing store and after seeing it in person,
it's hard to believe they would close it. It's such a cool concept...
like a museum and store all in one. A lot of people were shopping in there."

During a broadcasting career that began in
Detroit in 1940, Foy was a staff announcer at Detroit radio station WXYZ-AM in 1948 when he was asked to take over as the announcer for "The Lone Ranger," a show that the station started in in 1933.

ABOUT THE DECEMBER 2010 ISSUE

Hi Eileen,

I really enjoyed the December issue, with all of the holiday photos of downtown Detroit back in the day. I was visiting relatives in Detroit and had just remarked to a friend how Woodward Ave used to be so brightly lit up during the holidays. You almost didn't need the street lights. The photos were enjoyably nostalgic!

I've attached the front & back of the kiddie booklet from Kern's that Santa probably gave me or a cousin. Sorry I didn't get it to you before the December issue was published. I found it in a trunk when we cleaned out my Mom's things after she passed earlier this year.

Take care,
Bev Milner, Los Angeles CA

Great issue, Eileen!

Love the old pics of downtown, Woodward and Hudson's.

I was fortunate as a kid to go to the Rotunda every year as we had relatives living in Lincoln Park.

In the '50s, I got my eyeglasses downtown on the 28th floor of the David Stott Building. My brother and I always told my mom that we needed to use the bathroom so we could throw a roll of toilet paper out the window and watch it unravel all the way down to the street. Now, that was fun!

Thanks for the memories!

Maureen Bailey, who played Christmas Carol during
the Hudson's Thanksgiving Day Parade, passed away
June 15, 2010 in Lancaster, CA.

She also played Wendy Darling in Mary Martin's TV production of Peter Pan, and Liesl in Martin's Broadway production of The Sound of Music. But Detroiters may remember her Motown work and her performances with the Don Large Make Way For Youth chorus.

MEMORIES OF DETROIT
EDDIE LUBANSKI
1929 - 2010

Warren MI ~ November 8, 2010
Eddie Lubanski was a professional bowler and charter member and past president of the Professional Bowlers Association. His competitive career spanned over four decades, culminating with being named Bowler of the Year in 1959. He was 81.

He continued his career as an instructor until early this year. Ed was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, ABC Hall of Fame, Polish American Sports Hall of Fame and City of Detroit Sports Hall of Fame. He was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Oak Park, where he was active in the Men's Club.

Eddie Lubanski: International Champion, He Remained Humble (PDF)
By Raymond Rolak

Read about Eddie in Detroit's Legends of Bowling, a 2001 article that appeared in the Detroit News.
That’s Jerry Goodwin (left) and me, Michael Collins (seated). I don't recall the name of the guy with the glasses.

When I was in high school, Jerry may have changed my life. At 16, I took a radio coarse he taught every Saturday in downtown Detroit. I took the bus; he drove a big white Riviera. I know this because I would come up with some chit-chat as he was walking to his car. Unfortunatly, while I had something important to say, eight other guys in the class were tagging along and ruining our conversation.

At some point during this 10-week session, he pulled me aside and told me he thought I had talent. He probably said that to everyone, including the guy with the glasses. It didn’t matter; it was all I needed.

I re-introduced myself to Jerry last September at the Motor City Radio Reunion. He had no idea who I was.

________________
ABOUT MICHAEL
Born and raised in Detroit and a graduate of Denby HS, Michael says
he’s been hooked on broadcasting since he was a kid. At the age of nine,
he would ride his bike over to the Eastland shopping center to watch
Bob Allison broadcast his show from WWJ’s remote radio studio.

After working his way through Ferris State as a disc jockey for WLAV in Grand Rapids, Mike worked at radio stations in Cleveland and Denver before returning to Detroit to host a morning show and later, a late night talk show at WRIF.

Jumping from radio to television news, Collins anchored and reported for stations in Lansing, Cincinnati and Detroit, winning 13 Emmy’s and other journalism awards including an Emmy for his anchor work at Fox 2/WJBK.

Behind the camera, Collins has traveled the country producing entertainment segments for ABC’s “The View,” VH-1, E! Entertainment, Fox News and CNN.

In the corporate world he has created video production for companies like
Ford Motor Company, Dow Chemical and Avery-Dennison.

“As a kid, the process of ‘live’ broadcasting fascinated me. It still does.”

EILEEN:  Well then, Ray, you'll probably enjoy the video below.
Fred Wolf hosts "Bowling Is Fun" from the Y-7 Bowling Lanes and can't stop raving about the new AMF pinsetters. But the real crack up is hearing him rattle off the list of prizes. You're sure to be less-than-impressed with the offerings...but in a fun way.

Here's what Lee Alan posted on Facebook:
"Fred Wolf was originally a professional bowler. He started on WXYZ radio, then continued on to national television network bowling shows.
On Detroit TV, Fred hosted the Gold Cup races, professional wrestling, and more. He was the first DJ to do a radio remote broadcast. As the morning drive time personality on WXYZ, he was far and away Number One for nearly his entire career. One of a kind. Never another like him."

Fred passed away in August 2000 at the age of 90.
