Dan Jendza     St. Clair Shores MI
Salesian Catholic 1966
Comments: IT'S GREAT! How about watching the Tigers and Lions at Briggs Stadium, Saturday afternoon wrestling on channel 7 (at the studio) or at Olympia, "Leapin' Larry Chene," "Dick the Bruiser," "Haystack Calhoun," The Capuchin Fathers "Soup Bowl." Catholic football league city championship game at the University of Detroit football stadium (outside). The "Goodfellows Game" Catholic school vs. Public school City football Championship at Briggs stadium, again outside. Cancelled in 1964 the day Kennedy was assinated I remember playing high school football in a leather helmet at University of Detroit football stadium, remember that...electric street cars on Chene street that went allllll the way downtown. 8 Mile wasn't a movie it was the "country.".A&W Root Beer, ever drink their "swamp water"? (A&W root beer+orange drink topped with hamburger dills -- almost better then a martini.) It's been great reminiscing.

Kathy Jendza     Saint Clair Shores MI
Lincoln
Comments: Helps me remember tons of things and names that I thought I forgot.

Penny Jennings     Santa Monica CA
Comments: I was born in Henry Ford Hospital in 1957. My dad painted the mural of the Hudson River in the restaurant at the top of Hudson's Department store. Jennings Hospital was named after my grandfather who was Henry Ford's personal physician. All of my family, on both my mom and dad's side, where born in Detroit! I haven't been back since I was 12 but it still holds a special place in my heart. My dad also designed several water fountains sculptures that were at Eastland Mall.

Bob Johnson   Roseville, MI
Denby 1973
Comments: This is so cool!
I remember a lot of the things mentioned here. The Harper Theater (now Harpos), Big Boys just down the block from the theater, Cunningham Drug Stores, working at Great Scott! on Harper at Barrett, the Cabana Cafe, the Bel Air Drive-in, the bowling alleys Chandler Park and Ritters. There is so much more and they were mostly good memories. This is a great site! Thanks for the memories for sure.

D. Johnson   Canton OH
Western 1954
Comments: The Big bands that performed at Jefferson Beach Marina and also Walled Lake Casino. We went to dances at these two places all the time. I also remember our prom night at Lovett Hall in Greenfield Village, and the short lived car called the Henry J.

Eric Johnson   Phoenix AZ
Cody 1982
Comments: Like the site...brings back memories.

Johnny 5   Las Vegas NV
Denby 1980
Comments:  I remember what I thought was an actual holday/event called "Devil's Night." I relocated and asked about Devil's Night and nobody knew what I was talking about. The other thing I remember, but try to forget is Detroit sized Rats (rodents) being cat-sized. Don't get me wrong here -- I still have good memories including listening to WWWW (W4) when they played AOR (rock & roll) and listening to AM radio CKLW with Byron McGregor doing his original broadcast of "The Americans" and hearing my own name and voice giving an eyewitness report on "CKLW 20-20 NEWS" Metro Beach, Angel Park and hearing Hydroplanes on Detroit River while at school at Whitney Young (Field) near Belle Isle.

Fred Jorgensen    Grosse Pointe Park MI
Alhambra (Phoenix AZ) 1970

Comments: Lots of great historic information that brought back fond memories. Will be back often to look
up more.

Charleen Rogocki Kaltz   Highland MI
Regina/Denby 1960
Comments: Tri Hi on Kelly Rd. -- loved their cherry phosphates. Jefferson Beach, St. Clair Beach, and who could forget the Notre Dame dances. I remember when we camped out at Kelly Woods, now known as Eastland. 7 mile and Gratiot was where to shop, before Eastland, or the streetcar downtown and eating at Greenfields. Aldo's was the best pizza
in town.

Mike Kapustin   Snohomish WA

Comments: Just received it [the link] a few days ago - have not completed it, but what i've seen is GREAT, especially the amusement park material. During the 50s, I made it to ALL of them. Looking forward to going through all of your material. You've done a super job!

Comments: Always loved getting "dressed up" to go downtown and see a first run movie. Also, at Christmas time there was something magical about the animated windows outside Hudson's (which will ALWAYS be its name). Progress and technology are good things, but the "good old days" will always be the best! Great website, too. Thank you.

Diane Kalinowski  Sanford MI

Comments: A great walk down memory lane. I don't remember Berlins though. Are you the Eileen Glick from Robot Printing?

Eileen: Nope, that wouldn't be me since I now live in Arizona. Believe it or not, there are about half-dozen Eileen Glick's around the U.S. -- and I think
two of them are in Michigan!

I have pictures of my family in our yard at Hartwell and Grand River with the tank in the background.

Janice Kaya   Plymouth MI
Franklin 1966
Comments: Eileen - did you have any relatives who lived in Canton or Plymouth? I grew up with Jack Trombley before he went to Viet Nam. He was a wonderful friend if you are related you can consider yourself blessed.

Eileen: I didn't know him, but we're probably distantly related since all Trombleys are. We are the largest related clan in North America, and that includes surnames Tremblay (the original French spelling), Trombly, Tremble, etc.

Big stove at entrance to Belle Isle, Vernors by foot of Woodward Ave., swimming at Webster hall pool, also shopping at Sam's Cut Rate downtown, making out at Palmer Park. Going down to the end of Woodward to Vernors for cream, and to Belle Isle.to cool off. That was before air conditioning in the car. Hot fudge puffs at Saunders...mmm...so good.

L. Kerchen   Canton MI

Comments: When the first McDonalds in the area opened (late 60s) on Telegraph, just south of 10 Mile. Everyone had to have a Big Mac.

Donna May Kimball  Sandusky OH
Dominican 1968
Comments: Wow. Nice Job. People don't believe I can be nostalgic for Detroit. Mom didn't drive so we took the bus everywhere, including annually to the State Fair, from Dominican everyday and even to Olympia Stadium for the Beatles and to Cobo for Herman's Hermits. Downtown Detroit Days via the Hayes express. Wayne State University. I miss my city.

I was growing up here in the 60s and 70s. I remember getting my first suit from Robert Hall on Van Dyke & Georgia, and Pants Galore was my favorite when I got my first job at 12 years old.

Comments: Remembering what Dearborn was all about...segregation of whites and blacks. They also had public pools for residents and many perks that no other city else had.

Lawrence Francis Joseph Harasiemowicz*     Twinsburg OH
St. Mary's, Orchard Lake
Comments: How about J.L. Hudson - Downtown and the Barber Shop with the locomotive and stuff, where the kids got their hair cut. The long lines to visit Santa Claus. Going to Briggs, later Tiger Stadium on Thanksgiving, and watching our Lions thrash the Packers. And then, going by streetcars and or buses later to watch the Red Wings play at Olympia Stadium. Or, Twi-night double headers. *My last name was changed to Harris, my freshman year
at SMOL.

Keener 13. Check out the tribute

Alan Hatley     San Jose CA
Comments: My father worked for Ford in Dearborn. We lived in Livonia and moved to California in 1965. I would have graduated from Franklin High School in Livonia in 1969. Your web site is very interesting and brings back a lot of memories. You don't show A&P, Kroger or Great Scott warehouse market as places to shop. I think Great Scott was one of the first warehouse supermarkets. I don't remember the exact location, but somewhere on Plymouth. I also remember when George Kell and Ernie Harwell were the radio and tv team.

Eileen: With the exception of Great Scott, A&P and Kroger are still in business, which is why they're not included on the site.
