JIM HENDRICK
SENATE THEATER
Captain Jolly visits Hudson’s STORYLAND
Eileen:
Always a great Newsletter and so much fun to read!
The November 2011 issue featured an email from a Jim Hendrick. I went to school with a Jim Hendrick. We attended Hutchinson Elementary and lived in the Parkside Housing project off of Conner Ave. Jim had an Eastside Shopper route that I often helped him with. It was a local throw away type weekly but well liked in the community.
Could you check to see if it is the same person? The reason I asked was that the Jim I knew was hot to be a sportscaster. He also had a little band in school and often played at the Parkside Recreation Center for Friday dance parties there.
He and his family lived in an upstairs unit in the Projects. If it is my old friend, would love to re-connect with him. Any help would be appreciated.
On another note, I have often wondered what has happened to many of the old gang I skated with at the Fairview Gardens Roller Rink that was located on
Mack Ave. and Fairview. I am refering to the time period of around March 1954 through late 1956.
The Hakim family owned it and it was run by Joe and David Hakim with their sister Rosemary and their mom handling the admissions at the door. Many very nice people in that group and would love to hear from them and how they are doing.
Keep up the great work on the Newsletter!!
An ardent fan,

EILEEN'S NOTE: I'm pleased to report that these two childhood friends are now back in touch with one another.
Tom Ryan was born in Detroit, and attended St. Gregory High School,
a small Catholic school on the northwest side. As a young boy Tom wanted to be a sportscaster, so he practiced his baseball “play by play” in front of the family TV set with the sound turned down.
He attended the University of Detroit, where, for a couple of nights a week, he got to hone his chops as a disk jockey at the campus radio station. After college, Tom got a job in the mailroom at Dearborn’s WKMH radio, before eventually being promoted to the traffic/production department. When WKMH switched formats and became WKNR, Tom struck up a friendship with KEENER jock
Dick Purtan. Before long he was producing, writing and supplying character voices for Purtan’s show.
Tom followed Purtan over to WXYZ-AM in 1968,
then to CKLW-AM in 1978. When Purtan left
CKLW in 1983, Tom took over as host of the
morning show. Tom moved to WOMC-FM in
1984, where he hosted mornings, and then
“Riding Home With Ryan” in the afternoon
until 2007. He still does occasional work for the
station, like the pre game show for the University
of Michigan and the yearly Woodward Dream
Cruise radiocast.
No stranger to television, Tom played the
Mr. Spock-inspired kids TV show host Sgt. Sacto,
who introduced cartoons, Three Stooges and
Little Rascals shorts from 1967 to 1970. Tom
was also the very scary movie host Count Scary,
for nine prime-time specials at WDIV and later
WXYZ and WKBD. A credit that few know about is Santa Claus, who Tom played for 20 years in the America’s Thanksgiving Parade, formerly the J.L. Hudson’s Thanksgiving Parade, before retiring in 2010.
Tom has an amazing talent that can win him a free beer in any bar in metropolitan Detroit. He can name the school colors for practically any high school in the tri-county area, due to his years of working sock hops and high school basketball games.
Over the years Tom has donated his time and talent
to many charitable organizations, including the
Beaumont Hospital Leukemia Telethon, the
Catholic Youth Organization, the March of Dimes
and the Michigan Humane Society. In 1999 he made
the ultimate sacrifice by donating a kidney to his wife,
Whether giving a “double pumper” salute as Sgt. Sacto, scaring the pants off people as Count Scary, or amusing Detroiters with his hilarious radio antics, Tom Ryan has entertained Detroiters for more than 40 years.

VERNORS BAKED HAM RECIPE
Remove skin and excess fat from ham. Rub liberally with brown sugar and stick cloves into surface. Place in baking utensil, add contents of one or two bottle of VERNORS according to size of ham -- sufficient to baste generously. Bake in slow oven until ham is heated through. Baste every fifteen minutes. This ham is delightful for cold plate or served as it comes from the oven.
