Harry Jarkey , a Detroit TV personality and nightclub entertainer
in the late '50s and '60s, was best known for a morning variety program
called Our Friend Harry , which ran from 1957-59, as well as The Fun House ,
a children's show with Ricky the Clown . He continued his career at places like
The Roostertail and Bay City's Wenona Beach Amusement Park 's casino,
where he worked for 30 years, until his retirement at age 75.
He moved to southern California in the '70s to live near another
former Detroiter and friend, Danny Thomas .

Thanks for the latest copy of the Detroit Memories Newsletter . I always enjoy it. You do a great job. I'll mark my calendar for your next Arizona/Detroiters Dinner .
I thought you and your subscribers would be interested in a new book
entitled "Goodfellows: The Champions of St. Ambrose" written by
Rick Gosselin . It's mostly about little eastside St. Ambrose and how
they went on to Briggs Stadium to defeat the mighty number one
rated Class A Cooley in 1959 in the greatest high school football
upset of all times. But, it is also about the biggest high school football
game every year in Detroit, the Goodfellow Game. I'm sure many of
your subscribers have fond memories of those games. I sure do.

Hi Eileen
Um...the postcard photo of the J.L. Hudson flag has
50 stars, so that means it was taken in 1960 or later
(not 1956).
Re: Planned demolition of the Lafayette Bldg.
The late Detroit Free Press columnist Jim Fitzgerald
must be spinning in his grave. This was a pet peeve/
project of his that he wrote about frequently from the
1980s until his retirement in the mid-1990s (1995?).

EILEEN RESPONDS: Actually, two people busted me on the flag photo. Here's my lame excuse:
I first found a black/white photo taken in 1956 to use. Then I came across the colored flag pic
and made the substitution -- forgetting to change the caption. It should have said 1966 .
Sheez, we have some astute subscribers out there!

was originally formed in 1874 by Captain J. W. Westcott to inform

June 1895 marked the first mid-river mail delivery by a
Westcott mail boat beginning more than 100 years of "mail-by-the-pail."
Today, the Westcott company's role has changed to include
a wide range of services: U.S. mail delivery; freight delivery,
storage, forwarding; message service; passenger service
to and from vessels; pilot boat services for the Port of Detroit ;
the sale of nautical charts, postcards, books, candy and cigarettes,
and even the occasional mid-river pizza delivery.

original Soupy Sales television show each weekend!
The series will provide a sampling of Sales' greatest TV hits, such as

BOBLO: ENTERTAINMENT ISLAND
Bob-Lo Park was established as an entertainment destination in 1898
by the Detroit, Belle Isle and Windsor Ferry Company .
In the beginning, it was a picnic spot, with beaches, athletic fields,
bicycle track, and a stunning Mangles-Illions carousel.
Over the years it grew into a unique island amusement park,
with a midway and dozens of rides.
Millions of Americans and Canadians alike share memories
of riding the swan boats or the train that circled the park.
For many, the best ride of the day was on one of the two the Bob-Lo Boats
( Columbia and Ste. Clair e) that took visitors to the island.
Departing originally from the foot of Woodward ,
where Hart Plaza now stands, and later from a dock just
west of downtown Detroit, the boats offered their own form of entertainment.
The 20-mile voyage took about 80 minutes as it wound down the river
past quiet marshlands and cottages that lined the shore.
After a long day of island fun, the slow cruise home was a relaxing
mix of memories, souvenirs and perfect sunsets.
The amusement park closed after the 1993 season.
Bob-Lo , however, lives on in the hearts of anyone
who grew up in metro Detroit during its heyday.
Highlighted artifacts on display in the exhibit include:
The Amusement Park map that illustrates all the locations of the rides
Bob-Lo Island Postcards and other merchandise
are also available for sale in the Dossin Great Lakes Museum Store.
It’s a great chance for visitors to take a piece of
Bob-Lo nostalgia home with them.

LADY OF CHARM
Edythe Fern Melrose
This is the "Charm Kitchen Cook Book" by Edythe Fern Melrose ,
better known to old time Detroiters as WXYZ's "Lady of Charm ."
In the 1930s, Melrose managed Detroit radio station WJLB .
She then moved to WXYZ radio, when she created her "Lady of Charm"
persona, dispensing recipes, fashion tips and household hints.
Melrose's philosophy was "A woman's charm depends upon three things:
how she acts, how she looks and how she cooks."
On WXYZ-TV her show aired from her home in St. Clair Shores,
the "House O' Charm," which was built and beautifully
furnished courtesy of her sponsors. In 1952 she earned $100,000.
Most of the recipes in the book are so unhealthy that it hardens
your arteries just reading them. One calls for a veal heart stuffed
with buttered bread crumbs and seared in hot fat. Yum!
At WXYZ you had to refer to her as "Lady of Charm."
She wouldn't answer to Edythe or Mrs. Melrose.
Her kitchen assistant was Gretchan , her daughter in law.
In the mid '60s, Melrose tripped on a cable at WXYZ, injuring her leg.
She sued the station and in 1976 received a judgment of nearly
one million dollars. She died three weeks later.
Lily Tomlin , a Detroit native, based her
"Tasteful Lady" character on Melrose.
