FROM THE DETROIT MEMORIES EMAIL INBOX Occasionally I receive an email I feel would be of interest to our Detroit Memories Newsletter subscribers. With the permission of the author, I'll publish them.
Eileen:
Just chanced upon your site and think it's great. My dad, Jerome P. Cavanagh, was the mayor of Detroit from 1962-70, and so a lot of what you write and display has great significance.
I'm the oldest of eight children he and my mom had. I attended Gesu (6 Mile and Livernois, across from UD College) for nine years, went away to high school for 2-1/2 years, then came back to UD High. I currently live in Royal Oak and have served as a Michigan Court of Appeals judge for the last 20 years.
I've become a bit of a student of Detroit history and have a lot of good (and not so good) memories of Detroit. It was great being at the center of the "happenings" in the mid-'60s as the son of the mayor, and to be able to experience all of this history firsthand. I met a lot of famous Detroiters and others (JFK, LBJ, etc.) and was right there in the middle of it all. I loved those times. We were the first mayoral family to live in the Manoogian Mansion, and we were there during the riots when tanks and the National Guard were stationed at the end of our street.
After his term ended, my dad returned to practice law. In November 1979, while he was in Lexington KY visiting a client in the federal prison, he suffered a heart attack in his hotel room and died at St. Joseph Hospital. He was 51. My mother is still with us but in declining health. (She and my dad divorced in 1968 and he had remarried.)
Downtown has changed so much that even I don't recognize it. It's sad now to see the "glitter" of the new buildings against the blight of the old on the perimeter of downtown. There's a hollowness to it all which is probably why your website has added attraction: you have to remember because so little of it is there anymore. But at one time Detroit was great; it was called "The Paris of the Midwest."
I don't mind you publishing my email with my address. I'd love to correspond with others about their memories of Detroit.
Sincerely,
Mark Jerome Cavanagh appealsman@mac.com

In the 1950s, cruising swept the nation. American streets became impromptu racetracks. Teens piled into friends’ cars and cruised with a new sense of freedom. To lure buyers to their particular makes and models, automobile companies targeted the youth market by focusing on design and performance. No place was that more relevant than on metro Detroit’s Woodward Avenue, the city’s number-one cruising destination and home of the world’s automobile industry. This unique relationship extended into the muscle car era of the 1960s, as Woodward Avenue continued to reflect the triumphs and downturns of the industry that made Detroit known throughout the world.
