RICHARD HASTINGS / CAPTAIN DETROIT
I hosted an afternoon kid's TV show in the early days of
UHF television in Detroit. I eventually left the Motor City
for a career directing major league sports for national TV.
Johnny Ginger, Bill Murray and Tom Ryan
all captained the show, but I was the original host.

We were at the beach in Lincoln City OR this past weekend and decided to take a walk along Hwy 101 through town. A bead store had gone out of business and was now replaced by Litehouse Chocolates, so we went in to scope it out. Great couple running the place. She makes all the chocolate, etc. We started talking about where we were originally from. Turns out he's Richard Hastings aka the first Captain Detroit on WJBK and Channel 50 back in the day. Told me he knew Soupy Sales. What are the odds that Captain Detroit would end up here?

Johnny Ginger, Tom Ryan and a guy named Bill Murray (not the Caddyshack one) all were on the Captain Detroit show. And none of them could remember the name of the original guy who played Captain Detroit.
