DETROIT STREET RAILWAYS

Who didnt ride the bus back then?
We took it everywhere!
To work, school, amusement parks, shopping,
visit relatives/friends, etc.
My thanks to H. Bernard Craig II, webmaster of
www.DetroitTransitHistory.info
for the above photo from 1956.
For more real blasts to the past, visit the
Detroit Transit History Photo Gallery
for glimpses of the old streetcars and buses.
Even if youre not interested in the DSR, the backdrop of the city
in some of these shots will make your visit worthwhile.

MOTOR CITY MUSIC ARCHIVES

Eileen,
My website, Motor City Music Archives is updated when I come across information I don't have, so, I'm always up for stories, contributions, etc.
Having been born in 1964, it's tough to nail my research with 100% accuracy; however, I am confident that my website is fairly accurate. Its a treasure trove for folks worldwide who want to know more about the Detroit rock scene, primarily 1965-1972.
I've been to your website many times and have always found it to be an excellent barometer of the spirit, adventures, and good times of those who were fortunate enough to experience and enjoy that "scene" and cultural revolution.
As the 'Tyler 8-7100 man' would say, "You do good work!"
I wish you the best in your continued efforts.

Eileens Note: Michaels website contains extensive list of The Bands and their members that were popular back in the '60s and '70s, as well as a webpage devoted to Lost Venues those places where we went to go dancing or to see concerts.

Grace and I had a wonderful time at your last reunion in Arizona.

GOT QUESTIONS?

QUESTION: What ever become of John Kelly and Marilyn Turner? Last I had heard they were in Florida.
Margie
ED: John Kelly and Marilyn Turner are retired and living in Florida. They frequently visit Detroit and still maintain an apartment in the area.
John left the show near the end of its run. He was tired of the daily grind, and always considered himself a newsman first, not a talk show host. Kelly & Company was renamed Company, and Marilyn Turner was paired with former WXYZ reporter Nikki Grandberry. Company was cancelled in 1985.
Company was the last big non-news program produced in Detroit. It was cancelled because it became cheaper for local stations to buy syndicated programming rather than to produce their own shows. Syndication killed local television as we knew it in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. TV in Detroit is pretty much a carbon copy of TV in Chicago, Dallas, San Diego or any other big city. Except for the local news, every station in the country offers the same programming. Sadly, there is no room in local TV for people like Bill Kennedy, Lou Gordon, Rita Bell, Milky the Clown and all the other local personalities we grew up with. Syndication has robbed television of its local flavor.
If you haven't picked it up yet, I recommend Tim Kiska's book "From Soupy To Nuts! A History Of Detroit Television" (now out of print). It chronicles the rise and fall of Detroit TV and will answer all of your Detroit television questions. It can be purchased from the EverythingDetroitStore, from my website, www.detroitkidshow.com, or at most every metro Detroit book dealer.
The Detroit Historical Society is honoring John and Marilyn, along with Detroit TV broadcasters Soupy Sales, Bill Bonds, Bill Kennedy, Emery King and Amyre Makupson with an exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum from March thru August 2009.
For details, go to: DHM EXHIBITS

QUESTION: What ever happened to Mr. Belvedere?
ED: I just finished a webpage devoted to Maurice Lezell, a.k.a. Mr. Belvedere, whose phone number (TY 8-7100) was the most recognized in Detroit. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you can listen to two of his jingles. http://www.detroitkidshow.com/Belvedere.htm Hes now retired and living in a Detroit suburb.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
QUESTION: I cant find anyone who remembers the early cartoon "Hercules." Do you?
W. Kunkel
Oklahoma City OK
ED: The Hercules cartoon series aired on CKLW Channel 9, beginning in 1963. You can read about the show's history, see rare photos and view video clips on my website. http://www.detroitkidshow.com/hercules.htm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
QUESTION: As a kid back in the '60s, I remember that, right before Sir Graves Ghastly came on, CBS had a program host, sort of a poor man's Atlas, with sword and sandal movies! Who was he?
ED: That was David the Colossus, but the show aired on channel 9, not channel 2. David, dressed in a Roman toga, would wrestle stuffed tigers, power lift phony papier mache pillars and challenge the TV crew to wet mop fights while hosting bad Hercules-type movies. Cheesy TV at its best!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
QUESTION: On channel 9 on weekday afternoons, there was this kid TV host who would show cartoons from his funhouse and most of the toons came from Japan, like Astro Boy! Who was he?
ED: Jerry Booth's Fun House was the show that hosted Astro Boy. Booth started working at CKLW in 1959 as Jingles the Jester on Jingles in Boofland, a show he created with partner Larry Sands in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. When Jingles was cancelled, Booth and Sands hosted the Larry and Jerry Show, also on CKLW. When Larry Sands left Detroit for an advertising career, Booth went solo with Fun House, hosting Astro Boy and Marvel Super Hero cartoons with his sidekick Clyde Casual, a moose head that hung on the wall of the Fun House.
There's a photo of Jerry Booth and Larry Sands on my website, www.detroitkidshow.com. Click on the cartoon of Jingles to see the photo and hear the Boofland anthem from Jingles in Boofland.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
QUESTION: I remember listening to a radio show when I was quite young and riding with my parents called, I think, Night Train, possibly with Mickey Shorr? It had really neat theme music. Do you remember more about this? Thanks.
ED: Mickey Shorr used the song "Night Train" by Buddy Morrow to open and close his evening show on WXYZ-AM. Mickey also worked at WKMH and WJBK where he played the top rock n' roll hits of the day. Shorr died in 1988, but his chain of Motor City car audio stores live on. You can hear a (bad) version of this theme song on You Tube at: UTUBE
